Autism Assessments for Children

If you’re wondering whether your child may be autistic, you’re not alone. Many families seek answers to better understand their child’s strengths, differences, and support needs.

At Child in Mind Psychology, we offer comprehensive, neuroaffirming autism assessments for children and adolescents across Sydney. Based in the St George area, we service families across Sydney.

What is an Autism Assessment?

An autism assessment is a structured process used to understand how your child communicates, interacts, and experiences the world.

We use gold-standard assessment tools, including the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised (ADI-R), Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System 3rd Edition (ABAS-3) or Vineland-3, alongside parent interviews, observation and standardised measures to build a holistic understanding of your child.

When should I consider an autism assessment?

You might consider an assessment if your child:

  • Finds social interactions confusing or overwhelming

  • Prefers routine and needs support with change

  • Has intense or focused interests that can impact functioning

  • Experiences sensory sensitivities or overwhelm (e.g. noise, textures)

  • Finds it difficult to understand others’ perspectives and/or read social cues

  • Has been flagged by a teacher, GP, or paediatrician as requiring extra support in these areas

Every child is different — an assessment helps provide clarity and direction.
