Therapy & Intervention

If your child is struggling with big emotions, anxiety, behaviour, or social challenges, you’re not alone. Support can make a meaningful difference.

At Child in Mind Psychology, we provide therapy for children, adolescents and young people across Sydney, including the St George and Sutherland Shire, using a neuroaffirming, evidence-based approach.

  • Understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours

  • Build emotional regulation skills

  • Develop confidence and resilience

  • Improve social understanding and relationships

  • Learn practical strategies for everyday challenges

We also work closely with parents and carers to support change beyond the clinic.

Our approach to therapy

Our approach is:

Neuroaffirming — we respect and support neurodiversity
Strengths-based — we build on what your child does well
Individualised — tailored to your child’s needs and goals
Collaborative — working with families, schools, and other professionals

We draw on evidence-based approaches such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Emotion regulation strategies

  • Social skills development

  • Parent support and coaching

What does therapy look like?

Initial Parent Session

We begin with a parent-only session to understand your child’s history, strengths, and current concerns.

Ongoing Sessions

Your child attends regular sessions where we:

  • Build rapport and safety

  • Teach skills in a developmentally appropriate way

  • Practice strategies through play, conversation, or structured activities

Parent Support

We provide guidance and strategies to help you support your child at home.

How do I know if my child needs therapy?

You might consider therapy if your child:

  • Seems anxious, withdrawn, or overwhelmed

  • Has frequent emotional outbursts

  • Is struggling socially

  • Is having difficulty coping at school or home

  • Has experienced a recent change or stressor

If you’re unsure, we can help guide you.

Therapy and assessment – what’s the difference?

Sometimes families are unsure whether therapy or assessment is the right first step.

  • Therapy focuses on building skills and providing support

  • Assessment helps understand your child’s profile and may lead to diagnosis

In some cases, both are helpful.
