Psychometric Testing

If your child is experiencing learning difficulties or you’re seeking a deeper understanding of their cognitive profile, a psychometric assessment can provide valuable insights.

At Child in Mind Psychology, we offer comprehensive cognitive and learning assessments for children across Sydney.

What is a psychometric assessment?

1

A psychometric assessment involves standardised testing to understand how your child thinks, learns, and processes information.

We commonly use:

WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children 6 years to 16 years 9 months) - IQ test

WPPSI-IV (for children aged 2 years 6 months to 7 years 7 months) - IQ test

WAIS-V (for adolescents and adults over 16 years) - IQ test

WIAT-III (Wechsler Individual Achievement Test) - Academic achievement test

These tools help identify strengths, learning differences, and support needs. Your psychologist will discuss the most appropriate tests with you after learning more about your child.

When should I consider a psychometric assessment?

2

You might consider an assessment if your child:

  • Is struggling with reading, writing, or maths

  • Is not progressing as expected at school

  • Finds learning frustrating or overwhelming

  • Has been flagged by a teacher as requiring extra support

  • May have a specific learning disorder (e.g. dyslexia, dyscalculia)

  • May be displaying indicators of intellectual disability

  • Would benefit from a deeper understanding of their strengths

  • Requires support to focus and stay engaged in learning tasks

What does the assessment process involve?

3

Step 1: Initial Parent Consultation

We gather background information, developmental history and clarify your goals.

Step 2: Assessment Sessions

Your child completes structured tasks assessing thinking and learning skills.

Step 3: Scoring & Analysis

We carefully interpret your child’s results, writing a comprehensive report

Step 4: Feedback Session

We explain findings in a clear, supportive way.

Step 5: Comprehensive Report

You receive a detailed report that can support:

  • School adjustments and transition planning

  • Learning support plans

  • NDIS applications (where relevant and a eligible diagnosis is made)
